The hundreds of square miles of land contained within Great Smoky Mountains National Park coupled with its scenic beauty make it obvious why this park is consistently one of the most visited national parks in the country. Most of the park is heavily forested, with these temperate deciduous areas showcasing exquisite flora and fauna as well as sights like gushing streams and roaring waterfalls. In all, there are over 800 miles of trails that meander through the park, including part of the 2,174-mile-long Appalachian Trail. Popular destinations within the park include the historic buildings and frequent wildlife encounters at Cades Cove, the huge Fontana Dam known for its fishing, the scenery of Roaring Fork and the waterfalls of Deep Creek. There are numerous car campgrounds within the park, affording many places to sleep but great demand during the busy seasons of summer and fall. Great Smoky Mountains National Park sprawls across both sides of the Tennessee-North Carolina border, nestled between the Nantahala and Cherokee National Forests to the southwest and Pisgah National Forest to the northeast.
